Description
Loukoumades are golden, crispy Greek donuts soaked in honey syrup and topped with cinnamon or nuts—a traditional sweet dating back to ancient times.
Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup honey
- 2 tbsp sugar (for syrup)
- 1/4 cup water (for syrup)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice or zest
- Ground cinnamon for garnish
- Optional: chopped walnuts or sesame seeds
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt, sugar, and warm water. Mix into a smooth batter and let rise until airy.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Using a piping bag or small scoop, drop portions of dough into hot oil.
- Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- In a saucepan, combine honey, 2 tbsp sugar, 1/4 cup water, and lemon juice. Simmer until slightly thickened.
- Toss hot loukoumades in warm syrup for full absorption.
- Serve garnished with cinnamon and optional walnuts or sesame seeds.
Notes
Serve immediately for best texture. Pair with Greek coffee or enjoy with a drizzle of Nutella and ice cream for an indulgent twist.
