Description

Loukoumades are golden, crispy Greek donuts soaked in honey syrup and topped with cinnamon or nuts—a traditional sweet dating back to ancient times.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp sugar (for syrup)
  • 1/4 cup water (for syrup)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice or zest
  • Ground cinnamon for garnish
  • Optional: chopped walnuts or sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, salt, sugar, and warm water. Mix into a smooth batter and let rise until airy.
  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Using a piping bag or small scoop, drop portions of dough into hot oil.
  4. Fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. In a saucepan, combine honey, 2 tbsp sugar, 1/4 cup water, and lemon juice. Simmer until slightly thickened.
  6. Toss hot loukoumades in warm syrup for full absorption.
  7. Serve garnished with cinnamon and optional walnuts or sesame seeds.

Notes

Serve immediately for best texture. Pair with Greek coffee or enjoy with a drizzle of Nutella and ice cream for an indulgent twist.
