Description
Crispy, syrup-soaked layers of filo pastry with a sweet walnut filling—this traditional Greek Baklava brings a taste of the Mediterranean to your kitchen.

- 1 package of filo dough (thawed overnight in the fridge)
- 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar (for syrup)
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2–3 whole cloves (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).
- Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish generously.
- Layer 6–8 sheets of filo dough, brushing each with melted butter.
- Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture (walnuts, sugar, cinnamon).
- Continue layering filo and nuts, finishing with 6–8 layers of buttered filo on top.
- Cut into diamond or square shapes before baking.
- Bake for 50–60 minutes until golden and crisp.
- While baking, combine water, 1 cup sugar, honey, lemon juice, and cloves in a saucepan. Boil and simmer until slightly thickened. Discard cloves.
- Let baklava cool completely, then pour hot syrup over it.
- Allow to soak at least 6 hours or overnight before serving.
Notes
Store at room temperature for up to 5 days. Avoid refrigeration to maintain crispness. Serve with Greek coffee or garnish with crushed pistachios.
