Description

Crispy, syrup-soaked layers of filo pastry with a sweet walnut filling—this traditional Greek Baklava brings a taste of the Mediterranean to your kitchen.


Ingredients

  • 1 package of filo dough (thawed overnight in the fridge)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar (for syrup)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 23 whole cloves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish generously.
  3. Layer 6–8 sheets of filo dough, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Spread a thin layer of the nut mixture (walnuts, sugar, cinnamon).
  5. Continue layering filo and nuts, finishing with 6–8 layers of buttered filo on top.
  6. Cut into diamond or square shapes before baking.
  7. Bake for 50–60 minutes until golden and crisp.
  8. While baking, combine water, 1 cup sugar, honey, lemon juice, and cloves in a saucepan. Boil and simmer until slightly thickened. Discard cloves.
  9. Let baklava cool completely, then pour hot syrup over it.
  10. Allow to soak at least 6 hours or overnight before serving.

Notes

Store at room temperature for up to 5 days. Avoid refrigeration to maintain crispness. Serve with Greek coffee or garnish with crushed pistachios.
