Fun to make - plastic bag ice cream!

This isn't new - or original - but it's fun to do, and the kids love making it almost as much as they do eating it.

How To Make Plastic Bag Ice Cream


1/2 cup half-and-half (if you don't have any, you can just use milk)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon sugar
4 cups crushed ice
4 tablespoons salt (preferably rock salt)
2 quart size zip bags
1 gallon size zip bag

Put the milk, vanilla, and sugar into one of the quart size bags. Squeeze out as much air as possible and seal. Place this bag into the other quart size bag and squeeze out the air and seal again. (This is to prevent leaking.)


Put the ice and salt in the gallon size bag, then place the filled quart bags on top of the ice. Squeeze out some of the air (but not all) and seal the bag. Shake and squeeze the bag so that the ice surrounds the smaller bag inside. Continue for at least five minutes until the ice cream is the desired consistency. You can make flavored ice cream by adding ingredients to the bag before shaking. Suggestions: chocolate syrup, strawberries, bananas, pineapple, peanut butter, etc.

You can eat it right out of the bag - a fun treat to make on those hot summer days.

A few further tips...
The kids and I made some of this the other day - and we discovered that it is better to NOT double the inside bag. It just took TOO long to get the ice cream to freeze that way. With a single bag, it only took about 5 minutes.

We made this with fat free half and half, and we used Splenda instead of sugar for some really tasty fat-free, sugar-free homemade ice cream. It was just as tasty that way as I remember the other! (Though that might be part of why it took so long with the double bag - I don't know.)
